Fourteen-year-old Nayaram is the youngest of five children. In his remote village in Nepal, people are either unemployed, involved in farming or animal husbandry at home, or away in India looking for paid work. Nayaram’s parents farm at home and occasionally find work as wage labourers in the village.
But what meager income they earned was not enough to buy school supplies, so Nayaram often missed school.
Nayaram’s situation was desperate until our partner staff invited his family and others from the village to participate in livelihood training. Nayaram’s family learned about animal husbandry and were gifted a few chicks to raise at home.

It was Nayaram’s responsibility to look after the chicks. He made sure they were fed and safe from jackals and wolves. And in no time, his family’s situation began to improve.
“With the chicks you provided,” he says, happy and proud, “I raised more chickens and got NPR* 7000 from selling three of them, which allowed me to buy school supplies. Now I have notebooks, pens, a school bag and uniforms and I can go to school regularly like my friends.”

Nayaram wants to go to college and start his own business so he can continue to help his family. Thanks to your help and his hard work, his dream will become a reality soon enough.

*Nepalese rupees (NPR) 7000 is the equivalent of A$80.
