Behind the Scenes of a Health Camp

In Nepal’s mountains, heavy rains can turn life upside down in an instant.

Torrents of water trigger floods and landslides that tear through roads, bridges, and homes – cutting off entire communities from the outside world. Highways can vanish beneath walls of mud and rock for days or even weeks, and in the worst cases, whole stretches of road are swept away. Vehicles are forced onto risky makeshift tracks, where every bend carries danger.

Reaching remote villages in these conditions is a race against the elements. Usual routes may be buried under metres of debris or simply gone, while alternative paths are steep, slick with mud, and prone to collapse. Narrow mountain roads grind to a standstill in traffic jams, and the threat of another landslide is never far away.

Yet, our teams push on. They climb, detour, and wait for hours – because for many villagers, this is the only chance for medical care they’ll get for months. Every extra hour on the road is worth it when it means a child gets treatment, a mother receives medicine, or an elder finally sees a doctor.

In these villages, in some of the most remote, hilly parts of Nepal – women rarely get the chance to focus on their own health or have access to professional facilities or medical care to do so. At first, our team never knows how many will come, as many of the women and girls belong to very conservative communities. But every time, we’re moved and inspired by the sight of women leaving behind their daily chores, travelling long distances, and taking a rare day for themselves – to see a doctor, get screened for cervical cancer or pelvic organ prolapse, and put their wellbeing first. And in so doing, breaking the stronghold of harmful practices too.

These clinics take weeks of planning. Our local team works with community leaders, health workers, and volunteers to choose the best location, spread the word, and ensure every visit counts. Field workers travel from house to house, inviting women personally and making sure no one misses out.

These clinics are bringing life-changing care to women who have spent their lives caring for everyone but themselves.
