Meet some of the little ones in NightCare

The little ones in our NightCare centres in Cambodia are all different.

Some are babies; others are toddlers. Some have been in care for a while; others are new. Some like to play with toys; others like to do craft.

But they are all the same when it comes to having experienced trauma no child ever should. And they are all the same in deserving of love, care and protection.

Sovanna,* who is four years old, has been coming to NightCare since she was two. When she first came to NightCare, she used to stand by the wall – unengaged and distant from the other toddlers at the centre. Her father passed away from sickness leaving her mum alone to support the family. Today, Sovanna has found healing and safety at NightCare and is a completely different little girl – articulate, bright, eager to learn and engaging with those around her.

Little two-year old Ary* used to play in the streets by himself during the day. But at night, Ary had to go to the karaoke bar where his mum works and hide in the closet all night. Ary’s nights included drunk men being mean to his mum, interrupted sleep and lots of fear from inside that closet. But since coming to NightCare a few months ago, Ary can have a full night’s sleep away from the scary karaoke bar closet.

Three-year old Mliss* has been coming to NightCare since she was one. Back then, she was aggressive, fearful and distrusting. But, over the past few months, she has created a beautiful bond with one of the nannies and is learning to play well with the other babies and toddlers at the centre. And when it’s time for dinner, she obeys and waits patiently. The positive changes in her are astounding.

And then, there is Samiya, a brave three-year old who found a safe home at NightCare. When she first arrived, Samiya was quiet and withdrawn and she cried for what felt like days as the adjusted to her new environment. But with time, love and support, she’s now a happy, playful little one, joining in activities with the other children, praying and playing with her friends.

As they begin to heal from trauma through safety, love and care, these little ones and their friends are reclaiming their childhood thanks to you.
