Country Profile- Nepal

With China to the North and India to the South, Nepal is a landlocked nation and is the only Hindu state in the world. Better known for containing Mt Everest and 8 of the 10 highest peaks in the world, Nepal is governed by a constitutional monarchy. The Nepalese people are intensely loyal to the monarchy and were devastated when 10 members of the royal family, including the king and queen were killed. Since 1996 Nepal has also been torn by a bloody Maoist insurgency characterised at times by extreme communist ideology, brutal murders and acts of terror.

Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world. 80% of Nepalese people rely on agriculture to survive and 42% of the population live below the poverty line.

Asian Aid's Role

Asian Aid began sponsoring children from Nepal in the 1970s which involved sending them to schools in India. Sponsorship in Nepal began in the mid-1990s with the establishment of an ADRA funded school at Banepa ( no longer funded by ADRA ) and later with the establishment of the Asian Aid orphanage in 1998. Unfortunately the Seventh Day Adventist Church closed its only school in Nepal, resulting in Asian Aid taking over and fully funding Zenith Academy for the sake of our orphans.

To date 860 women have received corrective operations for third degree uterine prolapse, a terrible condition in which a woman's uterus hangs between her legs, inside out, with disastrous medical and social complications.

A mobile health clinic is also funded through which our staff conduct primary healthcare and referral services to poor villagers in remote areas.

“…I tell you the truth, whatever you did for the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.” Matthew 25:40
