What: Improving literacy and skill base of tribal people to allow them to improve their own lives.
Where: Near Vishakhapatnam, India.
Why: The people of this tribal group have inadequate income from their crops and live well below the poverty line in very poor conditions. They are mostly illiterate and have minimal sources of income.
How: Providing health, hygiene, and literacy training, agricultural improvement classes, alternative income generation programs, and establishing village development committees and self help groups.

The goal of this project is to bring holistic development among the community through improved literacy and building the capacity of local people to allow them to improve their own lives.

Jathapu is a Tribal community which still preserves its culture and traditions. They love music, song and dance. The Jathapu people are hard working, men usually work on the hilly terrain and bring the products to the house and women do the cleaning and finishing work near the house. Jathapu villages are located in very remote and hilly area. Most of the people income is below poverty level. Most of the adults are illiterate but are desperate to become literate. There are village schools but do not have enough teachers and the school does not function regularly. People do not have safe drinking water. Their income is inadequate; their agricultural cultivation does not yield enough to support the entire family as they don?t have enough water for irrigation.

The major activities that this project will address include health and hygiene training, literacy training, agricultural improvement classes, alternative income generation programs, establishing village development committees and self help groups.

This will enable the people of Jathapu to improve their lives and support their families in the future.
