After a recent visit to Nepal by Asian Aid?s International Program Manager, Quentin
Campbell, it is clear that the support Asian Aid is providing to women and their
families is life changing work. With Asian Aid having supported over 8000 Uterine
Prolapse operations in Nepal our partner COSAN has become well known for the support
of women's health. Asian Aid is now also promoting the awareness of Uterine Prolapse
and what causes it. In the western districts of Jajarkhot and Surkhet Asian Aid
is sending teams of health volunteers to remote villages up to two days walk away
to spread the awareness and prevention message.
Due to cultural beliefs and lack of education on health matters many women believe
that this condition is 'normal' for women. When they find out that a prolapsed uterus
can be operated, affected women are overjoyed. Those women who attend one of our
screening camps and have been found to have a 3rd degree prolapse or worse are referred
to the nearest hospital for treatment. The treatment and education on the causes
of UP, that Asian Aid provides with your support, gives the women the gift of freedom
from pain, suffering and social stigma.
For around $350 or a year's income for Nepali women, this screening, operation and
post-operative care can be undertaken. All we ask is that the women tell their daughters
and granddaughters how they got their prolapse and how to prevent it so that the
next generation does not suffer like they did.
